We use our set of Javanese instruments to support the teaching of music in schools, facilitate group music making and promote a non-western musical form.
The St David’s Hall Javanese Gamelan consists of tuned percussion, drums and gongs handmade from bronze with traditional woodcarvings. The set was commissioned for St David’s Hall by the St David’s Hall and New Theatre Trust (now Arts Active Trust) and has been based at St David’s Hall for over 10 years. Playing gamelan is a fun, stimulating experience that develops listening skills, flexibility and group music making. Orff’s traditional classroom music making is based on Javanese gamelan and it has a different soundworld quite distinctive from traditional western music.
Arts Active runs taster sessions for schools, a children’s group for 4-7 yr olds, hosts a weekly community ensemble and organises residencies and public performances.
“The teacher was excellent, the 2 hours flew by with all the children actively
involved throughout. A real ‘music making’ experience from start to finish.”
