Open Orchestras

Open Orchestras has been carefully developed through participatory design with young disabled musicians, teachers and music leaders to address a lack of ensemble musical provision in SEN schools.

Open Orchestras is a project delivering music sessions in special schools in Cardiff enabling both pupils and staff to benefit from bespoke participation and training. Open Orchestras has been carefully developed through participatory design with young disabled musicians, teachers and music leaders to address a lack of ensemble musical provision in ALN schools.

In these sessions our music leaders work with cutting-edge technology to enable children with a variety of severe impairments to make music, for example using eye-tracking technology.

There is a building block approach to these session where we start with a one to one workshop which is tailored to the individual pupil, growing into group sessions developing music making skills alongside the individual sessions.

Currently we are working with two ALN schools in the Cardiff area as part of the Open Orchestras programme offering transition and continuum through from Primary to Secondary aged participants.
