Dovetail Orchestra

Dovetail Orchestra exists to provide a welcoming space for people seeking sanctuary and refugees – Building connections through music and supporting musical learning on a regular weekly basis.

A diverse band of musicians and two singers perform together on a stage with a piano, violin and guitars.

Dovetail Cardiff officially launched in January 2025, creating a safe musical space where anyone from the sanctuary seeking and refugee communities in Cardiff and nearby are welcome to join.

Celebrating the many languages and cultures represented in our group through music we work on Welsh folk songs, original compositions and traditional songs from participants’ home countries. Our sessions create a lively blend of styles that we love to sing, play, and dance to. It’s not just about the music, it’s about sharing stories, building friendships, and learning from one another too.

Rehearsals take place Thursday mornings – 10am – 11:30am, followed by refreshments. No musical experience is needed, and all styles of music are welcome, whether you play, sing, or want to try something new, we encourage you to come along and give it a try.

Cardiff Dovetail is led by Helen Woods, supported by a group of friendly musicians to support and guide everyone’s musical journey.

To register your interest, please email Dovetail on cardiff@dovetailorchestra.org.uk, telling us a bit about yourself and any music you enjoy.

Payment for bus travel to the church is available if you need it.

“Dovetail is the only place I feel I belong to and people there love me and welcome me all the time. It is more than a quiet place; it is memories and laughs in every corner.”

“You can feel the love is spreading everywhere when the music just starts, really you can feel it and feel like your heart wants to dance too.”

“Without any doubt join the group, try to come and you won’t stop. Trust me.”

“Join us for the best time, and you’ll never regret it.”

“When we come together, and we sing, that joy – it’s like bringing the world alive again.”

“If you’re looking for a space for love, peace, joy, togetherness, I think this is a space you can come in.

“Music is healing. When you come here and have that joy, that smile and going out again, it’s making your day, it’s like seeing the doctor for therapy.”

“I give gratitude to those guys, because the people that come around you, and how you feel, the joy of music – it keeps the peace. Keeps the love. Brings people together. I be grateful all the time. Music is the food of the soul.”
