As part of the Cardiff Classical Series at St Davids Hall we run a range of “extras” alongside to add to your experience as a whole

Pre-Concert Talks
One hour before each of our concerts we have a 30-minute insight into the music and the context to the performance. These popular events are accessible and informative and a great way to get more from your concert experience.

Talk Hosts:

Dr Jonathan James draws on both his conducting and teaching experience to give enthusiastic lectures in venues around the country. He works as a presenter for orchestras, including the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic, and is founder-director of the Bristol Pre-Conservatoire.

Dr Keith Chapin lectures in music at Cardiff University School of Music. Keith is from Alaska originally and has also worked in New York and New Zealand and is also an active amateur violist.

Classical Roadmap Talks
‘Roadmap’ talks are designed to help you navigate your way through the different periods and developments of classical music. They pack both essential information and fascinating tidbits into under an hour, and are delivered with a light touch by Dr Jonathan James from the piano. Whether new and curious to the scene or a concert veteran, there will be plenty there for you to enjoy.

Young Artists Showcase
Before a selection of the Cardiff Classical concerts we will be hosting young performers on the Level 3 day stage of St David’s Hall from the region’s music schools. These performances last for a maximum of 20 minutes and aim to offer young artists the opportunity to showcase their skills and expand their profile as a musician. This is a fantastic opportunity for these young people who are at the start of their musical journey and it offers them the chance to experience the work of some of the world’s most prestigious performers and conductors

Young Composers Scheme
This offers aspiring young musicians aged 14-18 with a passion for music to develop their skills in composition, instrumentation and arranging. This invaluable opportunity is offered for young people to learn from and work alongside professional composers and highly experienced instrumentalists from Wales to develop their portfolio of work. These course run each term during the Welsh half terms – get in touch to apply or find out more!

Schools Programme
During the year we work with both primary and secondary schools to offer composition and performance projects. These projects vary throughout the year so please do get in touch to find out what exciting opportunities we are offering at the moment.

Arts & Health
We work in retirement homes and care homes to offer music and art sessions that look to promote and support the wellbeing of the residents through creative practices. We have in person sessions and online resources available to offer. Please do get in touch to request access to our Online Resource Sessions which look to support wellbeing through Art and Music. These are free to access.

Podcasts
Hosted by Jonathan James and joined by Angharad Smith, this bubbly duo is known on our podcasts as ‘JJ & Haz’. Join them both as they delve through all music and genres, share their own favourite pieces with you and don’t forget to look out for those musical jokes that they chuck in there as well!
