Primary School Multi Arts Project – Tidy!

We’re looking for 24 schools from Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Do you want training for teachers to build confidence and skills in the arts and exciting creative arts workshops for your pupils?

What is ‘Tidy!’?

Tidy! is a multi arts project for KS1 and KS2, that encourages children to engage with questions surrounding the environment, sustainable living and our everyday lives – how can we create a tidy playground, a tidy school, a tidy town and a tidy planet? Questions are used as a stimulus to create poetry, music and visual art.

The Tidy! project is an opportunity for pupils and teachers to work alongside professional artists and eminent arts companies, including Arts Active, Welsh National Opera, Music Theatre Wales and Literature Wales to create a unique staged performance at St David’s Hall.

Important dates:

Teacher training day: January 2017 (date tbc)
School workshops: January-April 2017 (details below)
Performances: 16 & 17 May 2017

The Tidy! project aims to:

  • Support the teaching of the music, art and language curriculum at KS1 and early KS2.
  • Promote an awareness of personal, community and wider responsibility, with relation to the environment.
  • Empower children to discuss ideas and arguments, give the children ownership and control of the meanings and content of the material they create.
  • Foster personal responsibility, interest in, and care of the environment, both globally and locally.
  • Share ideas, practice and techniques through INSET training, and the creation of legacy material.
  • Develop the pupils’ performance skills.
  • Promote collaborations between different arts organisations, individual artists, and schools.

What’s the commitment?

  • Classroom teachers will be closely involved throughout the project and attending a compulsory professional development session.
  • Each participating school will host a series of workshops for two classes of children. Each class will participate in two poetry sessions, and four additional workshops, in either music or visual arts.
  • The school will need to arrange for both participating classes to visit St David’s Hall (Cardiff) for the day either 16 or 17 May, where they will participate in one performance, and become part of the audience for another performance (supporting children from the other participating schools).
