Young Composers Spring 2023

Young Composers Course Spring 2023; Learn to compose for brass ensemble.

Have your piece recorded PLUS an opportunity to enter the St David’s Hall birthday fanfare competition!

Are you an aspiring young musician aged 14-18?

Do you want to develop your skills in composition, instrumentation and arranging?

This February, St David’s Hall is celebrating its 40th birthday and as part of the celebrations, we want you to write a brass fanfare, with an opportunity to enter your composition into a public competition.

In conjunction with the Cardiff Classical Series at St David’s Hall, this term’s Arts Active Young Composers course will focus on learning to compose for a brass ensemble. You will be working alongside professional brass players and guided by composer Richard Barnard.

At the end of this FREE four-day course, you will be able to hear your composition played live by the musicians. The performance will be recorded and sent out for you to keep and include in any portfolio you may be building for school or university.

In addition to attending the course, you will have an opportunity to enter your piece into a competition to select Saint David’s Hall’s celebratory 40th birthday fanfare! The competition will be judged by a panel of professional composers and the winning entry will be played live at St David’s Hall during the Welsh Proms.
