When John joined Music Lab as a teenager, he was approaching the end of school and feeling unsure about what came next. He had a strong interest in the music industry but didn’t identify as a musician and had little experience with music technology or creative production.
Music Lab provided a supportive, low‑pressure space where he could explore those interests. With monthly sessions focused on different genres and creative approaches, alongside visits from industry professionals, John was able to experiment with a wide range of tools, styles and processes. This variety helped him develop practical skills while also discovering what kind of creative work suited him best.
Alongside hands‑on learning, the programme placed a strong emphasis on progression. Through ongoing conversations with tutors and visiting practitioners, John gained insight into education options, career paths and the realities of working in the music industry. This knowledge helped turn uncertainty into informed choices.
Over time, John grew noticeably in confidence. He became more engaged, contributed ideas within sessions, and began working more independently with production software and techniques.
As a result of his time at Music Lab, John progressed to studying Music Production at degree level. His journey shows how access to high‑quality creative programmes can help young people build confidence, develop skills and take meaningful steps towards a future in the music industry.
